INTRODUCTION

Located on a residential street in eastern New York, the Arlington Library is often stopped by passers-by to admire its striking exterior and period design. I kept a part of the material used inside and redesigned it. The original intention of the design was to create a long and narrow space with bookshelves as the walls, giving people a feeling of depression. When people step out of the space, the whole space is revealed, implying the freedom of reading. There is a banned book section which is a special gallery at the back of the building with projectors and screens that can provide presentations or animated demographics about their history. A coffee shop was added to the original plan to provide a break space for people to sit quietly and read.
